Tennant still rules at Richards Bay smelter!
After months of lengthy negotiations between client, contractor and supplier UDUMO TRADING cc was awarded the contract at Bayside Aluminum. On being awarded the contract, Udumo's MD, Mr.Peet Vermeulen headed straight for Sorma S.A. the South African distributor for the TENNANT brand of cleaning equipment. Having utilised Tennant equipment on this site during a previous contract he advised:
" There is no other machine for this type of application."
The selection of Tennants new SENTINEL INDUSTRIAL SWEEPER followed. When asked what the important factors where when making his decision to purchase Tennant, Peet replied: " Reliability, effectiveness, after sales support and continued participation by Tennant S.A. on the previous contract made the decision easy. "

Scrubbing Theory in layman´s terms
mopping units Mopping a floor simply removes some debris but generally all that is happening is that dirt is being smeared evenly over the mopped surface. There is limited rinsing that takes place even when using a double mopping unit as the clean water bucket is generally dirty early in the process. Mopping is a maintenance system not a thorough cleaning system. There is only one effective way to scrub a floor regardless of the surface type.

Before scrubbing takes place the surface should be swept. Thereafter the surface needs to be scrubbed using suitable machinery and detergents. The debris generated by the scrubbing process must then be removed. The surface should also be rinsed from time to time to remove detergent residue. This is much like a washing machine cycle. Add clothes, detergent, water and set to wash. Rinse and dry. As simple as that! Well at least a floor requires no ironing. However in most cases the detergent selected is the key to success.

Sounds expensive you might say. What is expensive is a dirty environment. A dirty mall, retail outlet, or warehouse contributes to either reduced "feet" or unmotivated staff. Few people like to shop or work in a dirty environment. As mentioned previously detergent selection is the key to success. People that work with their hands don't use a wire brush to remove grime and dirt from their flesh. The use of a suitable hand cleaner is usually the choice. Mechanical scrubbing is simply applying detergent, agitating the surface with a brush or a pad and removing the loose debris. The following 3 combinations will give a better idea of the systems that can be complied to suit the size of the area to be cleaned and the frequency of cleaning required.

Scrubber selection tips!!
  • Simple operation
  • Easy on site daily maintenance

  • Float valve
  • Separate solution and recovery tanks
  • Curved squeegee.
  • Robust construction
  • Effectively suits application to achieve required result. ( Coverage vs. recommended run time.)
  • > Reliable and cost effective. > Purchase price + Life cycle running costs = Total purchase price. (Not purchase price alone.)
  • Resale value.
  • Supplier history and after sales support base.
  • Machine population and references.

How to achieve success:
Request a comprehensive survey of the application in order to justify the equipment recommended. Request a demonstration to check that the physical ability of the equipment recommended offers the required result. If a short demonstration is not convincing enough request a suitable rental machine for a longer period to ensure your long term requirements can be achieved. Request a summary of costs as follows:

Purchase price: Rental / Depreciation / Lease. Consider interest rate, escalations & exchange rate.
Full maintenance plan: Check what is excluded and what costs relate to exclusions.
Consumable cost: Brushes, skirts, squeegees - quantities consumed per given period.
Fuel consumption where applicable.

Question: If the experienced supplier cannot offer the above information how can you as the customer budget effectively?

KNOW WHO YOU ARE DEALING WITH.
To get a better idea of the potential suppliers capabilities physically make the time to visit their establishment. This will certainly give you an idea of their operation and expertise. Inspect parts holding on offer and be sure these parts relate to the machine on offer. A list of user references with the same or similar application will afford the necessary feedback. An equipment population list and a list of machines maintained by the supplier will help in the decision making process.

BEWARE OF:
COMPLEX MECHANISMS - SOME MANUFACTURES CONTROL CARDS COST THOUSANDS. POOR OR COMPLEX DESIGNS AFFECT LIFE CYCLE COSTS
